Messiest Desk Contest: Top 5 Finalists

this entry has 0 Comments/ in General Organizing, Innovatively Organized News / by Innovatively Organized
January 22, 2013

Thanks to everyone who nominated a desk for our contest!  We received many cluttered, crowded, and overwhelmed desks nominated for a chance to win an organization makeover!

Congratulations to our five finalists!  Now that we have announced the top 5 messiest desks, it’s your turn to help us determine the winner.

Starting today, vote for your favorite messiest desk every day this week (January 22-26)!  Then check back on January 28 when we reveal the grand prize winner!  We will transform Seattle’s messiest desk and share the progress on our blog, so you can see every detail of the organizational makeover!   But only one messy desk can win 16 hours of paper related organizing services with Innovatively Organized (plus a one-year subscription to Getting Organized Magazine; desktop organizing supplies from Smead and GeekPeek.tv; and modern storage bins from Turnstone!).

Messiest Desk #1 - Volunteer with Paper Overload (Martha)

Martha’s home office is cluttered with file boxes, paper, and office equipment related to her extensive volunteer and regular part-time work. Nominated by her sister, Martha is described as a “fabulous person who volunteers extensively in the community” and with an organized office, she “could be more effective in her volunteer and paid work.”

Messiest Desk #2 - Business Owner with Clutter Challenge (David)

Busy balancing all of his roles as a business owner, teacher, volunteer, parent, spouse, and house-keeper, David finds it difficult to organize all of the clutter in his office which includes receipts, email printouts, recipes, schedules, and other computer-related supplies. David’s “loving, but frustrated, wife” nominated him in hopes of helping him clear the mess consuming his workspace because he “is always helping someone else, but doesn’t spend much time on himself.”

Messiest Desk #3 - TV Producer with Cubicle Chaos (Heidi)

Nominated by a co-worker, Heidi’s cubicle has a surprising array of items ranging from food items to books to Halloween costumes, figurines, golf clothes and innumerable piles of books and files. According to her co-worker, “the nearly architectural quality of the stacking and piling” makes Heidi “almost invisible to passersby!”

Messiest Desk #4 - Nonprofit RN with Piles Galore (Laury)

As a Registered Nurse for a non-profit community clinic, Laury’s workspace is covered in stacks of charts, piles of paper, educational materials, soda cans and supplies for the children’s holiday party she coordinates each year. According to her co-worker, “organizing Laury’s workspace would be a way of giving back to someone who has devoted her life to improving the lives of so many others.”

Messiest Desk #5 - Educator with Overcrowded Office (JoAnn)

This full time teacher, a graduate student, a part time clinical faculty member and a toddler mom struggles to find space to do her work in her overcrowded office. With clutter consisting of a mix of papers, professional books, office supplies, papers, children’s books, books and boxes, JoAnn is hoping for a “functional office to manage all of the balls she is currently juggling.”

Choosing Paper in a Digital World

this entry has 0 Comments/ in General Organizing, Individual Productivity, Time Management / by Innovatively Organized
September 6, 2012

In today’s age, it seems as though everyone lives and breathes through their digital devices.  Some of us check email on our mobile phones, while others take notes at meetings using tablets.  At Innovatively Organized, we often highlight apps and online resources that we find to help boost productivity for busy professionals, such as our Best iPhone and iPad Apps for Time Management and Productivity checklist.

However, there is nothing wrong with using paper to stay organized.  For some, the simple act of writing a task down and physically crossing it off allows them to stay more organized.  For others, it makes it easier for them to remember what they need to accomplish that day.

Regardless of whether you prefer apps or paper, the key is consistency.  Try using one central tool for your calendar or to-do list.  This will help you stay organized and manage your time more efficiently.

What paper planners or calendars do you use?  Share with us in the comments below!

Wrist Watch Review: Why You Need to Buy One

this entry has 0 Comments/ in General Organizing, Individual Productivity, Time Management / by Innovatively Organized
September 5, 2012
Has anyone ever told you that wrist watches are obsolete?  For those of you under the false notion that watches are no longer needed, and simply used as accessories, allow us to explain.  Even though most of us carry a smartphone or have a computer nearby to reference the time, checking these devices actually disrupts productivity.

How often do you check your mobile device for just the time?  For most of us, it is easy to sneak a glance at a missed call or new text message that comes in when your original intention was to simply check the time.  These seemingly short distractions can actually add up and derail your productivity.
For this reason, at Innovatively Organized we recommend wearing a watch and buying a clock for your office.  Throughout the day, having the time easily visible will allow you to stay on schedule, without losing productivity.  Here are a few of our recommendations:

For the Visual Person - you will probably benefit more from a radial clock or watch, which allows you to see the passage of time as the hands on the clock move.

For the Analytical Person - we suggest a digital clock or watch so you can quickly check the time and maybe even have a timer built into the device.

How do you check the time while at work or on-the-go?  What are your favorite watches and clocks?  Share with us on the comments below!

Quick Tips

Create a system for processing business cards you receive. Try delegating the data entry portion of the task to an assistant or intern.
Never plan every minute of your day – add buffer time to your day for the unexpected tasks that pop up.
Start prioritizing your tasks to ensure you spend your time and energy doing what is important.
You definitely demonstrated what you do best – being organized! It was very apparent that you’ve gone through training and certification and truly know your business.Jeanette H., BPW
Make sure to sync your devices regularly so your information is always accurate and doesn’t contain duplicates.
I am able to accomplish more, in less time. When I work in my home office, I’m not distracted by piles of paper all around me. I am able to proudly show off my work space now! Angela Shen
When organizing your paper files, avoid labels like “miscellaneous” and “random.”  You’ll encounter difficulties finding them later.
When downloading an image or file, make sure to save it in a specific folder rather than to your desktop.
Create a set of email policies for your small business so everyone’s on the same page when it comes to writing and sending emails.
Try setting time limits for tasks that easily eat away your day, like responding to email or checking Facebook.
